Dynamic Positioning Position Reference Systems

Position reference systems used on DP vessels.

In this section we will consider some of the PRS or "Position reference systems" to use their full term.

For a vessel to have DP capability it must first know where in the world it is. That means it requires a position and that position can be geographical expressed in latitude and longitude or by UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) or it can be a relative position obtained from a fixed terrestrial object or sub-sea object.
The DP system needs to establish the vessels initial position when setting up and this becomes the DP vessels Reference Origin. There are many systems in use which feed provide positional feedback data for use by the DP System. These include but are not limited to the following.
